Epiblepharon is a condition in which an eyelid muscle (the preseptal portion of the orbicularis oculi muscle) and an extra roll of skin push the eyelashes upwards toward the eye. It is present at birth and occurs most commonly in individuals who are of Asian, Hispanic, or Native American descent.

Surgery is often required when the eyelashes rub against the front of the eye (cornea) causing a foreign body sensation, redness, irritation, avoidance of light (photophobia), and tearing.

For this patient, Dr. Abboud performed a customized Asian blepharoplasty with forward advancement of the left upper eyelid fat. This allowed him to volumize the left upper eyelid hollow with the patient’s own eyelid fat and consolidate the multiple folds into one smooth eyelid crease. This technique can be done under local anesthesia in the office.
